Motif Homes latest design input + photo feature in ArchDigest - AD IT YOURSELF article, Charming Farmhouse Living Room Ideas to Gather ‘Round has us pinching ourselves!

We had the opportunity to chime in one small part of designing a Farmhouse Living room and it is about plaid! One of our favorite patterns.

SAY YES TO PLAID :

“Plaid ottomans provide extra seating options in this layered farmhouse living room, which is rooted in a variety of neutral hues. “To evoke warmth and a cozy atmosphere, include a variety of textures and patterns,” says Tiffany Matthews, the founder of Motif Homes in Greensboro, North Carolina, of designing farmhouse-style spaces. “For furniture, choose warmer tones like creams, reds, various shades of brown, and deep greens to create a harmonious look.” "

Interested in learning more of what we have to say on Charming Farmhouse Living Rooms? Let’s dive into a Q+A:

  • How can I design a farmhouse living room?

Our classic farmhouse design includes a color palette of white or off-white paint, painted shiplap, reclaimed wood ceiling details, natural stone elements on a centered fireplace, and matte black finishes. While we emphasize the significance of carpentry and millwork in farmhouse design, it’s the furnishings that truly express individuality. These pieces should foster a warm and inviting ambiance. Picture a generously deep sofa that sits low to the ground, upholstered in a more relaxed fabric, with a welcoming chair on each side of the fireplace. We often prefer earthier tones in our furnishings to evoke a connection to nature. Envision rich chocolate velvet, mahogany-hued area rug, and patterns that blend large-scale plaid with delicate prints on ottomans, throw pillows and throw blankets. When considering ceiling height and natural light, adorn your shelves with larger items such as handcrafted pottery and nature-inspired artwork.

  • What materials make sense in a farmhouse living room?

We enjoy creating striking contrasts using color, texture, and natural materials. By layering natural wood, stone, and black metal finishes over a white neutral like Sherwin-Williams Alabaster, we achieve a harmonious look. A-frame ceilings invite natural light and provide the perfect opportunity to incorporate wooden beams and shiplap elements. Consider integrating reclaimed wood beams along the angles to enhance depth and dimension. We particularly love to highlight the ceiling, as it is often overlooked. Designing with an A-frame ceiling infuses the rustic charm that is characteristic of farmhouse style.

  • What color palettes are typically used to fashion one?

Deep, rich browns combined with white or off-white serve as the foundation for the design. We opt for whites that have a touch of warmth and less reflective, such as Sherwin-Williams' Alabaster or Shoji White. An overwhelming amount of white can be visually disorienting, so it’s essential to ground the space with wood beams and matte black finishes on light fixtures and cabinet hardware. Additionally, incorporating shiplap accents is farmhouse style essential. For furniture, choose warmer tones like creams, reds, various shades of brown, and deep greens to create a harmonious look.
