HOMESTEAD FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

“The kitchen is the heart of the home.”

This statement rings true for our new construction project, Homestead Farmhouse. Each wall is chalked full of details, and we cannot wait to walk you through each one.

While the details of Homestead Farmhouse are fascinating, the history of the land hit at a personal level for Motif Homes founder and lead interior designer, Tiffany Matthews.

When I received the address, I knew exactly where I was headed. ‘The Matthews’ Property’ as our clients called it. I know it better as the land my husband’s grandparents used to own. In Summerfield, NC, tucked behind a row of pecan trees, sat an open field. This field is where our clients planned to build a modern farmhouse family home. Because of my personal family history, great clients, and love of modern farmhouse design, we lovingly named this project Homestead Farmhouse. I couldn’t wait to have Motif Homes in the details of the design.

Let’s jump in…

Motif Homes was hands-on in the design from the beginning. We partnered with architect Stephen Jobe and builder Mark Disney from Disney Construction to bring this dream home to reality.

We packed a lot into 2700 sq ft. Top areas of focus included main-level living, an upstairs bonus area over the garage, ample attic and storage space, multiple hosting options throughout, a wide open kitchen including a coffee bar area, and a three-season back porch.

Different life stages were a big consideration in the design. Our clients have three teenagers. While life is currently a full house, having the space to live comfortably now and as an empty nester impacted the layout of the open living spaces. With fewer walls sectioning off spaces, the living area has room to spread out or stay close, as well as a bonus room and three bedrooms to retreat to.

Pro-tip:

A coffee, tea, and drink station and walk-in pantry are kitchen must-haves.

The design must be intentional. Each area houses very specific items that keep the space organized and counter clutter to a minimum. We love to work with our clients to tailor each area to their specific needs.

The modern farmhouse color palette consisted of a hint of warmth in the white, subtle earthy green, and natural wood tones throughout. The exceptions were in the kids' bathrooms. We went with a deep navy vanity for a masculine look in the boys bathroom and a softer pewter gray double vanity in the girls bathroom for a lighter feminine feel. Wall colors were matched to the River Run cabinetry from Omega Creations Kitchen and Bath Design Firm.

It was such a pleasure to work with Omega to create the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room of our clients dreams. We were able to fill in the gaps and tackle the needs of the client together. The kitchen housed numerous details behind the doors and drawers, like adjustable peg systems for serving ware, pull-out trash cans, a spice rack, and a utensil organizer.

The coffee bar area included open and closed shelving, drawers, a pull-out trash can for easy disposal, and temporary open lower shelving that was perfectly sized and already pre-plumbed to fit an ice maker in the future. In the original drawings, we had a wall to the right of the open shelving. Once framing had begun, we decided to eliminate the wall for a more open view, which welcomed in more natural light and created a small gathering/conversational spot. Space planning in 2D and 3D (designing the layout of the space and how areas flow) is so important to have on paper, and at the same time, there has to be a level of flexibility when being present during construction. This small shift made a huge difference. Now we couldn’t imagine the coffee bar closing in on all three sides.

Off the kitchen is the large walk-in pantry. It has an appliance counter, open shelving for dry goods, plenty of lighting, and outlets to operate smaller kitchen appliances like the microwave, standing mixer, toaster, etc. The barn door saves space in a high-traffic area and adds warmth to an otherwise all-white hallway. The pantry is also in close proximity to the garage, which allows for short trips from the car when unloading.

The range wall is accentuated by the 48-inch ZLINE Autograph Edition pops of polished gold and matte white and the patterned 8x8 Warm Deco Cove tile backsplash. We deemed this view the “jewelry wall” of the kitchen because of the abundance of beautiful details.

Shiplap to the ceiling took the place of the traditional tile backsplash, and a wood header in the kitchen opening gave another nod to the farmhouse design. While a large stainless steel under-mount sink was selected, we incorporated an apron-front sink detail by bringing in the Cosmos Calacatta Pearl quartz countertop. Utilizing the quartz in this way added character and an eye-catching detail to a space that would otherwise have the traditional fixed front panels.

The eight-foot island with seating for five offers an open view into the kitchen, highlighting the finish selections. We incorporated polished nickel, stainless steel, polished gold, and champagne bronze. The Top Knobs hardware and the accent detail on the 14-inch Hudson Valley bell pendants worked together to carry the dominant finish, polished nickel, throughout the kitchen. A polished nickel finish reflects the surrounding color and is warmer than a chrome finish. Stainless steel was pulled in through the Whirlpool appliance package and Durasnow accent details on the ZLINE range and hood. The pop of polished gold is eye-catching on the ZLINE range and hood and works well with the softness of the Delta Broderick champagne bronze pot filler and sink faucet.

Because we were a part of the design of Homestead Farmhouse from the very beginning, we were able to consistently carry a warm and inviting feel throughout the home. It was a pleasure to bring this design to life, and we know our clients will make wonderful memories here for many years to come!
